FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT MINIATURE HORSES
Why buy a miniature horse?
Our first answer is .... "Why not?!!" They are so cute and friendly that most people find it hard to keep only one once they experience the world of miniature horses! But miniature horses are more than just cute. They make excellent pets, great starter horses for young children, companion animals for other livestock including standard sized horses, therapy animals, show horses and driving horses. Miniature horses are a great introduction into the horse world and just plain fun for all ages!
What do miniature horses eat? And how much?
Miniature horses eat the same things standard size horses eat ... just a lot less! In fact, your lawn or backyard is perfect for your mini during the spring, summer and autumn here in the northeast. During winter, a flake of hay (and a handful of grain when winter is in full swing) will keep your mini happy.
Do I need a barn for my mini?
It is ideal to have some sort of structure for your miniature horse to be penned when necessary for whatever reason, flies, inclement weather, vet or farrier visits etc. You will also want a dedicated space to store their hay, grain, grooming and riding or driving equipment. Most miniature horses grow such a long coat for the winter that a small 3 sided shelter to get out of the wind and nasty weather is usually just fine for them. One of our clients actually made a little stall in their garage for the not so nice days of winter.
What about vaccinations and deworming?
Yes, just like your dog or cat or standard size horse, there are certain vaccinations that will help keep your mini happy and healthy. Specific deworming and vaccine schedules will depend on the lifestyle your particular mini leads. Ask your vet for more info.
What is the life span for a miniature horse?
With good care, minis live well into their 30's, much longer than your dog or cat! So be prepared for a long, loving friendship with your special mini!
Do miniature horses need to live with other miniature horses?
No. Although a second mini would be ideal and a great companion (and may be in your future plans), minis do well living with other kinds of animals like sheep, goats, cows and of course, standard sized horses. If you plan on spending a lot of time with your mini, he/she may even do fine living alone. It really depends on the individual horse.
How tall will my miniature horse grow?
Most miniature horses are between 29 and 34 inches tall (although some are even smaller than that!) To be eligible for registration in one of the three miniature horse registries, miniature horses are only allowed to grow up to 38 inches at the withers (the last hair on the mane). But size is also dependent on your mini's parentage. Being able to see your mini's parents will give you a good indication of the height at which your mini will mature.
